Elegant Hanukkah Cookies with Wafer Papers

This year, I wanted to make Hanukkah cookies that were elegant. I made one set of round, blue cookies with a dreidel on them, another with a gold Star of David on a gold scroll background:

I "cheated" with these: the cookies were store-bought Walker's Shortbread Lemon Thins (certified Kosher); they were iced with white royal icing and, once it was hard, I glued the wafers (kosher) on with Karo light corn syrup (also kosher). They didn't require a border, so they were a quick way to make a pretty cookie.

I made Star of David sugar cookies, iced, glued on wafers, and piped a stiff border with a #16 tip. Cutting out the stars from the sheet of wafer paper was a test in patience, but I think the end result was worth it!

The wafer papers are available at my shop.

Folks, if you ever get a flu shot, this is the winter to do it. All of us, including my visiting parents, had it badly; Christmas was pretty miserable, health-wise. Cookie-wise, it was great. The turquoise & red santa and Noël wreath cookies I already posted, here, and the red Scandinavian deer cookies, here. The other cookies were:

I made three sheets of Xmas and winter patterns, and used them on hearts, stars, and Xmas stockings.

Modern Xmas Tree Cookies.
(I "cheated", using Lorna Doone cookies as base)

Cute Christmas Owls. The baby wanted to eat them all!

My friend Amber requested Victorian angel cookies.

I loved the idea of Santa on planes, trains, and automobiles,
rather than the usual reindeer sleigh.

Art Nouveau Stained Glass Border Cookies.

Victorian Santa Cookies, Set 1.

Victorian Santa Cookies, Set 2.

They made great preschool teacher gifts.

Vintage Christmas Children from Edwardian postcards.

They were all made with wafer papers—all but the Christmas Tree and Xmas Owls cookies were based on early 1900s postcards. The wafer papers are all available at my shop.
